Preliminary USB2PCMCIA FAQ
I have a computer with an express card slot and no pcmcia slot, can I use the usb2pcmcia card?
If your laptop has USB 2.0 ports you can use the usb2pmcia card if your PCMCIA card is 16-bit.
Will the usb2pcmcia work with my ____ PCMCIA card?
The usb2pcmcia currently works with only 16-bit PCMCIA cards. You can determine if your card is 16-bit or 32-bit by reading the card’s specifications sheet.
NOTE: ALL VERIZON PCMCIA CARDS are 32bit so they will not work with this application.
Do I need a power supply?
View the power consumption of your PCMCIA card, available on your PCMCIA card specifications sheet. Then, use the power supply comparison cart to see if you need the PWR-5V powering option. More details>>>Power Supply Comparison Chart
What about MAC?
ARS Technologies has released support for developers on MAC Operating System - Mac OS X.
My PCMCIA card reads “CARDBUS”? What type of card is it?
If your cards reads “Cardbus” on the back or in the specifications manual, it is a 32-bit pcmcia card.


If you need to use your PCMCIA card, but your new computer or laptop lacks a PCMCIA adapter, use our usb2pcmcia card to convert your USB port into a virtual PCMCIA adapter.

Based on the USB 2.0 interface, the USB2PCMCIA® offers potential speeds of 480Mbit/s. ARS Technologies’ usb2pcmcia allows plugging and handling of any 16-bit ’pc card’ type PCMCIA card.

This can be any standard or custom 16-bit PCMCIA card (Type I, II, or III).

ARS Technologies is still developing support for 32-bit PCMCIA cards. If you’d like to know when 32-bit support is available, please join the ARS Technologies product update list.

The usb2pcmcia offers simple migration from PCMCIA form factor to USB; full access to memory and I/O space of the PCMCIA card; and handling of IRQ events.

The usb2pcmcia functions on these Operating Systems:

Windows 98, ME, 2000, XP, Server 2003, Vista
Linux - 2.4.xx and 2.6.xx kernels
Mac OS X (for developers)
Installation Software
The usb2isa software includes UNIVERSAL SOFTWARE LAYER feature.

The ARS Technologies software developers kit, SDKBUS ,is available for converting the software of the PCMCIA card to work on USB, if needed.

Color: The usb2pcmcia comes in a clear plastic box. Our engineers have re-designed the clear enclosure for the USB2PCMCIA so that it is more stable.

Do you need the sdkbus?

The UNIVERSAL SOFTWARE LAYER should provide all the software you would need to get our USB2PCMCIA card to work with your PCMCIA card(s). We offer the SDKBUS for developers. Otherwise, our hardware comes with all the software and drivers you will need.
